Deutsche Börse’s Clearstream has reached a significant milestone with its D7 digital securities platform, surpassing €10 billion in issuances. The platform has been instrumental in issuing large digital bonds and structured products. Notably, state-owned KfW has launched several substantial bonds through D7, including a recent €3 billion issuance over seven years.
On the other end of the spectrum, D7 facilitates the issuance of around 15,000 structured products monthly, totaling approximately 250,000. These bespoke derivative-like securities contribute to the platform’s growing success, with a volume of around €3.5 billion recorded by mid-June.
While some may debate the classification of these securities as blockchain-based due to the centralized registry system, the use of DAML smart contracts on the D7 platform underscores its blockchain essence. The efficiency and automation achieved through smart contracts are pivotal in the evolving landscape of digital securities.
The European Central Bank (ECB) has recognized the potential of blockchain in enhancing settlement processes, leading to the launch of DLT wholesale settlement trials. Notably, D7 was utilized in a simulation involving intraday repo transactions, demonstrating the platform’s practical application in real-world financial scenarios.

Furthermore, Clearstream actively participated in trials involving the French wholesale CBDC for settlement, showcasing the platform’s versatility in accommodating various digital assets. The successful outcomes of these trials have prompted calls for the seamless integration of trial infrastructure into a long-term solution to advance Europe’s digital financial ecosystem.

Jens Hachmeister, Head of Issuer Services & New Digital Markets at Clearstream, emphasized the importance of a stable financial infrastructure in Europe, echoing sentiments shared by ECB Director Piero Cipollone. The ongoing exploration of leveraging trial experiences highlights the commitment to fostering innovation and competitiveness within the digital financial landscape.
As the digital securities market continues to evolve, the collaboration between industry players, regulatory bodies, and technology providers will be crucial in shaping the future of financial markets. Clearstream’s achievements with the D7 platform underscore the transformative potential of blockchain technology in revolutionizing traditional financial processes.
Looking ahead, the industry is poised for further advancements in digital asset tokenization and blockchain integration, paving the way for a more efficient, transparent, and secure financial ecosystem.
