Lindokuhle Sobekwa has emerged as the winner of the prestigious 2025 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize, bagging a substantial £30,000 award for his remarkable work. The accolade was bestowed upon Sobekwa for his book titled “I carry Her photo with Me,” a publication by MACK in 2024. The selection process involved a competitive shortlist that included talented artists such as Cristina De Middel, Rahim Fortune, and Tarrah Krajnak, each of whom will also receive £5,000.
Originating from South Africa, Lindokuhle Sobekwa’s journey into photography commenced in 2012 through the Of Soul and Joy Project situated in the Thokoza township. His dedication to the craft led him to become a part-time photographer for Live Magazine in 2013 and subsequently exhibit his work internationally at renowned galleries like Kalashnikow Gallery, No Man’s Art Gallery, Goodman Gallery, and Magnin-A Gallery. Sobekwa’s affiliation with Magnum Photos in 2018 culminated in his full membership status in 2022.
The winning project, “I carry Her photo with Me,” delves into Sobekwa’s poignant exploration of his sister’s vanished life during a critical decade. Through a poignant blend of photographs, handwritten notes, and family snapshots, the project delves into the intricate tapestry of Sobekwa’s familial history and the broader societal reverberations of disappearances in South Africa against the backdrop of the enduring legacies of Apartheid and colonialism.
Shoair Mavlian, the director of The Photographer’s Gallery and chair of the Deutsche Börse jury, lauded Sobekwa’s utilization of photography as a powerful medium for personal and collective storytelling, encapsulating his family’s narrative of loss, memory, and the complex socio-political landscape of post-Apartheid South Africa.

Established in 1996, the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize recognizes artists who have significantly contributed to the realm of international contemporary photography in the preceding year. Past laureates of this prestigious award include notable names such as Lebohang Kganye, Samuel Fosso, Deana Lawson, Cao Fei, Mohamed Bourouissa, and Trevor Paglen.
