South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa has been awarded the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation prize for his work titled “I Carry Her Photo With Me.” The project delves into the personal narrative of Sobekwa’s half-sister, Ziyanda, exploring their sibling relationship within the broader context of post-apartheid South Africa.
Sobekwa’s photographic series captures the life and disappearance of Ziyanda, who reappeared in 2013 after an 11-year absence, gravely ill and bearing scars from her struggles. Her untimely death at the age of 22 left Sobekwa grappling with unanswered questions and a sense of loss, symbolized by her refusal to be photographed before passing away.
The photographer’s poignant storytelling combines images with handwritten notes and domestic scenes, offering a glimpse into his family dynamics and the profound impact of Ziyanda’s absence. Sobekwa’s evocative portrayal of grief and memory resonates with viewers, drawing them into a narrative that is both personal and universal.
According to Anne-Marie Beckmann, director of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, Sobekwa’s project not only delves into sibling relationships but also sheds light on the broader socio-political landscape of post-apartheid South Africa, where stories of loss and resilience are intertwined.
Shoair Mavlian, director of the Photographers’ Gallery and chair of the Deutsche Börse jury, commended Sobekwa for using photography as a transformative tool for storytelling. The simplicity and clarity of Sobekwa’s work, captured through basic photographic tools, highlight the profound impact that a camera and a keen eye can have in conveying powerful narratives.
While Sobekwa clinched the top prize, the jury also recognized the remarkable contributions of the other shortlisted artists – Cristina De Middel, Rahim Fortune, and Tarrah Krajnak – each receiving accolades for their distinctive visual storytelling and artistic vision.
The 2025 Deutsche Börse prize exhibition, featuring the works of all four artists, offers a diverse range of perspectives, from lyrical portraits of Black cowboys to intimate moments frozen in time. Sobekwa’s ability to capture fleeting memories and emotions through his lens underscores the enduring power of photography in preserving and communicating complex human experiences.
Through his award-winning series, Lindokuhle Sobekwa has not only honored the memory of his late sister but has also created a visual narrative that transcends personal grief to resonate with audiences on a profound and emotional level. His ability to distill the complexities of loss, family ties, and societal change into a series of compelling images underscores the enduring relevance and impact of photography as a medium for storytelling and reflection.
