Deutsche Börse’s Clearstream, a key player in post-trade services, is set to venture into the realm of cryptocurrency custody for institutional clients. This new initiative will be facilitated through a partnership with Crypto Finance, a Swiss subsidiary that recently obtained a MiCAR license enabling it to offer crypto services across Europe. Notably, Deutsche Börse had acquired a majority stake in Crypto Finance in 2021, underscoring its strategic move into the digital asset space.
Jens Hachmeister, Head of Issuer Services & New Digital Markets at Clearstream, expressed that integrating crypto custody services aligns with Clearstream’s broader agenda of digitalizing financial markets. The move aims to provide clients with seamless access to emerging asset classes while leveraging the established post-trading infrastructure’s reliability and regulatory compliance.
Initially, clients of Clearstream’s International Central Securities Depository (ICSD) will be able to custody popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether through their existing accounts with Clearstream Banking SA in Luxembourg. This development comes on the heels of Deutsche Börse’s foray into the cryptocurrency market with the launch of Deutsche Börse Digital Exchange (DBDX), a platform offering cash cryptocurrency trading using a request-for-quote (RFQ) model and backed by Crypto Finance for custody services.
Deutsche Börse has been actively involved in the tokenization space, with Clearstream’s D7 supporting over €20 billion in digital securities issuance. While a significant portion of this issuance was centralized via central securities depositories (CSDs), Deutsche Börse’s investments extend to digital collateral platforms like HQLAᵡ. Additionally, Eurex Clearing, a part of the Deutsche Börse Group, recently secured regulatory approval to utilize digital collateral for margin requirements.
